hey everyone, im a newbie to the site and tdi world. just bought my first tdi a few days ago and now it wont start.

will driving the glow plug light began to flash, then the car died, when i turned on the switch the wait to start light did not come and and the motor would spin over but not crank. i replaced the glow plug relay (180), relay 109, and glow plug harness, i havent replaced the glow plugs yet, im gonna order them tomorrow. when i removed them they were covered in a black ash on the tip, i cleaned them and put them back in and the car ran for about 10 minutes then died again, i removed the GP's again and they had small white marks on the tips. Is this a burn mark? i cleaned them again but now they car will still not crank. the wait to start light comes on and goes off after a second or two but the car will not fire.

any ideas? does this sound like a GP problem, if i can get it to crank i am going to take it to a shop or dealer and them run the diagnostics.

before the problem the car was running great, it has 200k miles and i think it has been sitting for awhile therefore may have some electrical issues

any help would be greatly appreciated :dunno

Wont start has nothing to do with the glow plugs unless it's winter.

It's not relay 109 if the glow plug wait to start light comes on. The glow plug white soot is normal, If the car won't; crank it's a bad ignition switch, clutch switch, or starter solenoid.

Any noise or click or just nothing? Check the starter solenoid. From the FAQ: http://www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q_how_to/multi/starterfix.htm
i thought the glow plugs were used everytime to crank the motor, i thought they had to heat up the chamber so the fuel would be hot enough to ignite

the motor turns over it just wont fire, so its gotta be fuel or electrical

They are used everytime but unless it's winter they aren't required to start. The car should start in summer even if the glow plugs aren't working at all.

Forget the dealer, they will rip you off. Autozone and the like can scan your car for free and get the error codes, first see that the codes are, otherwise you're throwing money at the problem.

Remove the intake, it could be totally clogged or the antishudder valve , lookslike a throttle, could be stuck closed. http://www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q_how_to/a4/intake_maniremove.htm No air= no start.
If you can't get to a code scanner, buy a ross tech vag com cable, it's not called VCDS. It's cheaper than throwing parts at it and you can always sell it after you're done since they hold their value very well. The genuine cable comes with software, ebay copies don't, use older software, and have no value afterwards. Even just for checking codes, I recommnd a genunie cable because of that.

Is the antishutter valve part of the egr valve? If not where is it? The ch
eck engine light is on because of the egr valve.
i have only been letting the engine turn over for a about 5-10 seconds, so i decided to let it spin longer and when i did the oil light comes on and the chime goes off about 4 or 5 times, this is the exact same thing it did before both times.

i have a code scanner on the way, but has anyone heard of this?
I assume you are getting fuel since the engine started before but is having different symptoms now.

Fueling: pPossible problem at the fuel tank getting clogged, clogged fuel filter, bad injection pump, or bad fuel shut off solenoid. Before I take too many wild guesses, scan for codes first.
guys thanks for the help, i feel like an idiot, there is a jumper wire in my fuse box by the drivers side door. the wire had came off one of the fuses.

is this a factory job or has someone rigged up the jumper wire, it goes from fuse #29 to #34, IDK? but it was loose, i put it back on and car fired immediately, i drove it for 30 minutes and no problems except for the glow plug (wait to start) light blinking

anyways thanks to all of you for your time and advice
There should only be fuses in the fuse box. Someone jumped the fuse and it probably fell off. Figure out why they jumped the fuse since that could be dangerous.
