Don't forget resale. TDIs have historically held their resale very well. The final cost to own something includes depreciation. However, past performance is not a guarantee of future results :) so don't plan on making money or anything.

:( That sucks. To cycle a car through limp mode you just turn the key on and off. Don't pull it out. This just restarts the car. Most of the time power is restored. Look through the FAQ article on limp mode.

No clue what could have caused your problem, a problem that fast is highly unusual. There are a number of things that could have caused it. One of many possibilities that doesn't throw a code is a big boost leak. If a hose pops off most of the boost and air leaks out instead of going into the engine. Many people would be interested so please give updates on what the repair orders say.

The scuff guard is generally called a splash shield. It's sometimes mistakenly called a skid plate but it's only a skid plate if you put in a metal replacement so that it provides some hard protection. As is, it provides water/sand/dust protection for the engine and belts, quiets it down, and improves aero. A metal replacement provides protection in case you hit something like road kill, ice chunks, or road debris. There's a FAQ article in the mk4 section which has more details.
