As the title suggests I just took a look at the horror show that is the cam wear on my BRM. I can't get the damn gasket to sit right and it keeps falling out of place. I THINK its in place now. I used some permatex sealant at the required places and tightened all bolts in order with a torque wrench. However The gasket is mushing out in places. A little bit.. not like bad mushing.. Mushing is not the right word. Its a bit visible around the bots.

I took the car for a very very very hard test drive and pulled in my drive way and poped the hood with the engine still running. I had a small plume of smoke coming out from beneath the right "HUMP".. next to the pump side. UGH. There has got to be a trick to getting that gasket right. How did they do it in the factory when they built the darn thing? I would suck working at the VW factory.

Any tricks to getting that gasket straight and true? I ended up tacking it to the cover with some of that sealant crap. I even lubricated it a little with oil.

As for the smoke: I'll put the torque wrench to the nearest bolt.. just to make sure I got it all the way.

Oh.. and the cams are a horror show. More on that later. With Pics. At least there was no sludge and looked really clean and healthy.

If you overtighten the valve cover bolts the gasket can get squished out a little bit. Off the top of my head I think it's something like 7 ft-lbs. So a little more than hand tight.

Try wiping the oil off and using a dab of gasketmaker to hold it in place as well. I put it in the cover and then put it on the head, not the other way around.

My torque wrench doesn't go that low.. so it 7 lb/ft seems a bit high. I'll back em off a bit. Probably fix the smoking thing too. The gasket its on good though. Thanks for the advice! Very tedious.:bowdown
