Rather than a signal, it's to help illumuniate the area you're turning into. I actually like it -- comes in handy parking along curbs on dark streets and turning onto streets that may have potholes after our rough winter. I don't think there's a setting you can change directly, but I'm guessing there's a VAG code responsible for it.
