Hi, this is my first post. Just purchased a 2006 Jetta tdi. Noticed exhaust smell at stop lights. Pulled the skid pan and checked out the back of the engine. There is a actuator about mid way down the engine that has a heat shield that looks like a silver baggie. This actuator is black with soot and so is the linkage and where it attaches. Is this part of the EGR cooler? No VW dealer in town, are there any on-line sources for these parts?
Also, car starts and idles great. Part throttle acceleration is good. Wide open throttle acceleration causes a noticeable surging and lack of power. Any ideas?

That is most likely the EGR, common problem and I think dealers may cover it under a TSB. Don't quote me on that because it could have expired. If you find out, please post a follow up. The surging may be related to the fact that the turbo gases are leaking out the EGR.

In the U.S, the emissions systems (most components) are warrantied for 8-years or 80,000 miles: http://www.epa.gov/oms/consumer/warr95fs.txt

If you are under 80,000 miles and this is the EGR valve that is leaking, I would make this an emissions systems warranty claim.

As for performance, the turbo is driven by exhaust gases, if the gases are leaking out before the turbo they aren't spinning the turbo and you are loosing boost. Small leaks can have a big impact on the turbo's performance.

Just bought the car. It has 132K on it. Probably on my own for the fix. Trying to find an on line source for the parts. Found the EGR on line but haven't found an EGR cooler yet.

Ok, I'm fairly confident the EGR cooler has a leak. I just called the nearest VW dealer to get a price. Depending on the VIN it is either $371 or $640. Probably just wishful thinking but are there any other sources for these? I saw a EGR cooler delete kit. What happens if install that instead?

Oops.... just re-read the cooler delete kit. It does not include the 2006 model:annoyed
