details: 05.5, 155k, pkg 2, stick.

It smells in the cabin with the hvac on. Turn it off and smell goes away. Leave it off and open windows (vacuum) and it smells again.

The odor does seem to go away after about a 1/2 hour.

The two most common things it can be (from reading) cabin filter and / or EGR leak.

Anything else?

TIA-
John

Any small leak in the exhaust can cause it, the last 8 inches or so broke off my exhaust and it was stinking inside if you opened a window at all.:)

Hey John,

The same thing happened to me in my '06 Jetta TDI. It ended up being the Exhaust gas recirculation cooler. There is a butterfly valve in the cooler to control the flow of exhaust gas and the bushing for the butterfly valve wore out and was allowing exhaust gas to escape into the engine compartment and then get sucked into the Air conditioner/ heater system. Mine was a defect and occurred at 60k miles. Hope this helps.
