I looked under my 1998 Jetta (w/ P/S) about a week after I had someone change my serpentine belt (for $100 :eek) and found the V-belt that drives the water and P/S pumps inside out. The shop owner tells me that this happens spontaneously all the time. I think that they rolled the belt off and rolled it on.
Is it even possible for a belt to do this by itself (after a shop has presumably tensioned it correctly)?
BTW, I've since found that this belt was 10mm wide when it should be 11.5mm, so it was riding low in the pulley groove.
