I looked under my 1998 Jetta (w/ P/S) about a week after I had someone change my serpentine belt (for $100 :eek) and found the V-belt that drives the water and P/S pumps inside out. The shop owner tells me that this happens spontaneously all the time. I think that they rolled the belt off and rolled it on.
Is it even possible for a belt to do this by itself (after a shop has presumably tensioned it correctly)?
BTW, I've since found that this belt was 10mm wide when it should be 11.5mm, so it was riding low in the pulley groove.

I've never heard of this before. Weird. Since it's shaped like a V it should stay in place assuming it's tensionerd.

If they used the right belt and had it under tension, I don't see how it could happen. IF the narrower part is the correct part number then maybe it's a bad aftermarket part?
