I have a 2004 golf tdi with a 5 speed and a kerma diesel 150 hp kit with almost 300,000 miles. This week i noticed a knock that sounded like it was coming from the drivers side of the engine bay. I can only hear the knock when the engine is under load and when its at operating temp, its normally a consistent sound that gets faster with the rpm and the speed doesn't seem to matter. There is a check engine light on for a fault with the glow plug in cylinder 4 but I dont think that that would cause this noise. Any ideas on what the problem could be?

My experience with a new (loud) knock sound in my ALH, was a spun rod bearing. The cylinder was hitting the head and that's the sound that I was hearing. Here's the sound. It doesn't sound too bad, but it was.
Not trying to scare you, these diesels make a lot of noise. If you've noticed a new knock though, it will definitely take more investigation
Edit: you'll need to pull the pan and rod caps to see if this is the case. Can you post the sound before you do? It's not the glow plug causing this.
Edit2: your engine is a BRM or BEW engine. I have no experience when them. I know they were susceptible to cam wear if the proper oil wasn't used. It could be a sound based on a bad cam.

The sound isn't there at idle or deceleration or even when i rev it up with it in neutral only when i'm accelerating or trying to maintain speed up a hill. So it cant be bad bearing in the motor. I was thinking it could be motor mounts but then it would make the sound regardless if the motor was warm or not

Do you know the history on the clutch? These vehicles were outfitted with dual mass flywheel combo clutches. A lot of times those clutches will make a rattling, knocking, chattering sound but my experience with that was it could could be heard during idle. Since I don't have direct experience with this engine, those are about all of the ideas that I have. Unless someone else can chime in, try posting your question on TDIClub.com .

My car sounded like that in dec maybe before, she’d start and immediately knock, drive it she’s fine until 20k miles later a few weeks ago it did it at any stop or light; for me it was the Dmf; flywheel.
