I am not quite clear about why the engine fan comes on even though it's winter now and alot of the times I don't drive all that much that it would get overheated and cause the fan to come on.
The wife just came back from shopping at no further than 15 miles and it was snowing outside and as soon as she parked the car in the garage the fan came on.
Also there is an ordor of some sort - almost rubber or electrical type.

The cooling fan runs when its doing a DPF regen its nothing to worry about unless you have another problem that a VAG-COM\VCDS scan would find.

Have a look at fan where cables emerge from fan unit, they tend to get brittle over time and can break/fracture which gives rise to a short.
