I replaced the drive ales on my 2000 Jetta TDI. One had a hex nut and the other had a 12 point nut. The Bentley manual says torque spec is dependent on the nut. Specifically:

Hex nut:
  • Tighten to 184 ft-lb plus a quarter turn
  • Loosen the nut 1/2 turn
  • Rotate the wheel 1/2 turn
  • Tighten to 184 ft-lb plus a quarter turn

12 point nut:
  • Tighten to 148 ft-lb
  • Loosen the nut 1/2 turn
  • Rotate the wheel 1/2 turn
  • Tighten to 148 ft-lb plus a 1/6 turn

This doesn't make sense to me. Is the Bentley manual correct?

My book talks about two different types of nut, but both 12 point - with and without ribbing - 70 Nm + 90° or 200Nm + 180°
Probably due to different hardnesses of the types of metal used for bolts. So your book seems correct to me
