When I open my driver's door, sometimes the light comes on and sometimes it doesn't. The door locks work fine with the key and with the button on the door at all times. The dealership said it was a bad "door lock actuator (sp?) and it would be $423 to fix. I had a broken wire inside the boot between door and body once and I got a body shop guy to fix that for $40 bucks. The dealer said that was all intact and the "code" box said it was the actuator. I told them no thanks at that price. What do you guys think? '06 Jetta TDI. Thanks

Go to another place to check the door actuator. A quick scan will reveal what the problem is.

Is it only the driver's side or is the pass side affected?

Most likely, it is a bad door module if you're sure the wiring is fine. http://www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q/a5/wiring-harness-vw-jetta-repair.htm As you can see, most early mk5 will have broken wiring in the door boot and it's possible it failed again. I would buy a used door module since it's easy to replace and it's not as common as on the mk4.
