This has got to be a joke...http://green.autoblog.com/2010/06/11/mitsubishi-to-transform-evo-xi-into-diesel-hybrid-beast/ For anyone who has ridden or driven one, the nature of the car is a high strung tuner type boy racer and a diesel and hybrid is a total 180. I don't even know anyone who has bought a new Mitsubishi lately.
Mitsubishi was seriously close to axing the 2013 Evo XI completely, a move that would surely break the hearts of many of its die-hard fans. Axing the Evo was not a move that the company wanted to make, but tightening emissions regulations were quickly closing in upon the hallowed Evo, forcing the company to take dramatic steps to keep it alive 'n kickin'. Mitsubishi initially considered switching the Evo over to a gasoline-powered hybrid, something along the lines of the PX-MiEV SUV concept. Luckily, the company decided against that far-from-desirable course of action. Now, the Evo XI research and development team has been given the green light to develop the next-gen model as a diesel hybrid monster, capable of preserving the Evo's highly regarded image.
Mitsubishi engineers hope that the clean-diesel technology and the addition of an electric motor will help keep the Evo XI's CO2 emissions below 200 grams per kilometer while also pushing the vehicle to 60 miles per hour in less than five seconds. The diesel's abundant low-end torque and inherently efficient design should make this Evo the most fuel frugal ever, but there's a few caveats attached. The diesel-hybrid setup will knock the Evo out of most competitive racing events, which we're all right with, but due to our slow-but-growing love for diesels, we wonder if this Evo will grace U.S. soil.
