I just recently had to put clutch in my 2005.5 jetta and front wheel bearings. after test driving the car , i tried the cruise out and it works but very irratic,it speeds up and slows down like your pushing the pedal and letting off of it.I thought it may be where the battery was unhooked for a few days and just needed to reset ,but i drove it for a few hundred miles and it still does it.I have also noticed the mpg display is reading higher than normal. any help is apprcieated.

maybe the VSS isn't working right? I'm not sure where exactly the VSS gets the information from, but possibly from a tone ring on the wheel? Kinda spitballing here.....

Well look at it this way? If it worked perfectly before you changed the clutch and wheel bearings and its irratic afterwards then its something you have disturbed. Check what you have done especially electrical connections.

Do you have access to VAG-COM or know someone with it?

It's the new hub. No install mistakes, no electrical issues, just a bad hub. I had the same exact problem for 7 months when I replaced the hub with a KMM hub. The bearings started making noise again after 7 months so I replaced it with OEM and the cruise control works perfect now.

Here's a thread about it if you are skeptical

Thanks for all the info, The hubs were kmm hubs , so that seems to be what is to be what is happening. The abs light and stability light came on today and the cruise is working right and the speedometer is not jumping now.so it seems that is not picking up right on one side , so will have to check the code and see which side.

Ok you need VAG-COM/VCDS if you have it or know someone with it, then you can do a driving test with it plugged (with another person operating the laptop) in using Measuring Blocks on the ABS Sensors so you can see the signal from each one on a graph to make sure they are consistance.
