What is a fair cost to replace the timing belt? 2004 TDI.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I need advice. I purchased a 2012 Passat SE TDI just about 3 weeks back. It is high mileage and will break 100,000 on Friday. I don't want to risk damaging my daily driver, so I am looking to get the timing belt replaced soon. I'm in the Des Moines, IA area. I've got a dealership and an independent (large) European auto specialist in the area. The independent quoted $1200 for the TBelt w/water pump. I'll have a price tomorrow from the dealership. Are there other options in the area that I could consider?
"European auto specialist " means nothing to me, and sadly, dealership also means nothing to me. It helps if they know the newer TDI and are meticulous. Doesn't matter what they work on, they can work on Hondas or Chevys. Experience helps but I think the underlying qualities matter more - if they are meticulous and if they can follow the instructions on this site, they should have no problems.
Thank you for your response. Yes, that's exactly why I posted looking for other options. I don't have a "comfort level" with either shop I've listed and am hoping to find someone of quality from referrals.

btw, Chitty - lovely xenforo site! I also admin n xF forum. Ours is a new PC support site. We are so very pleased with the xF software.
Don't buy super super cheap parts because they'll be the made in China ones...
aka CRAP = Chinese Replacement Auto Parts. :)
The local European auto specialist, with a raft of BMW/Mercedes/VW/Porshe autos out front turned down a timing belt change for me.....because they would have a steep learning curve to get it right and they weren't prepared to go through all that 'learning' .

So...I did the 'learning' personally and it very well with the solid help found on this web site.

Yes, that would be the one. I'm very familiar with them as my ex was one of their lead mechanics for years. I had hoped things had changed. Thanks for the info, @shuswap .

I'm okay with minor things like oil changes, and will tackle refilling the AdBlue and the changing DSG fluid change myself. But I'm hesitant to try the timing belt without an experienced guide.

Unfortunately, there don't seem to be any Guru's in the central Iowa area. I would highly recommend JasonTDR in Madison Wi. http://www.jasontdr.com/ It's a bit of a drive, but I am pretty sure the cost will be much less than the dealership, and you will have the satisfaction of knowing that the job was done right with quality parts.

Yes, finding a reliable TDI tech often means scheduling a road trip, but... people like Jason are certainly worth the effort!

I did my own for around $400
I would love to achieve cost savings like that, but without an experienced person to guide me, I believe driving to a Guru or visiting the dealership are my only options.
