So I overheated to about 240F for 5+ minutes before I noticed the gauge. I believe I have a failing waterpump (minor leak) and the coolant level was down. Was able to top off coolant with H20 and check on it for the hour drive home and was spot on at 180F for the next hour.

So now I got the car apart and parts on the way....

...so it seems to me I should have had a warning light (buzzer?) for either the coolant level or temp, which I didn't.

What is it on a 96 passat tdi?
What is the failure trend?
Where is it located?
