I have a 2000 Jetta TDI with now 70K on it that
runs fine. I am considering a move to a newer model
but the cam shaft along with the ongoing DSG transmission
issues has me thinking twice.

Plan on having those issues. I believe most will and you don't want to be unhappy. If you are willing to deal with it, go for it!

However, 70k on a 2000 is very low and the car will last you a long time. If you're still on the original timing belt I would change it ASAP. 12 years is too long.
