I think I know the answer but want to get a second opinion first.

Clutch on 2001 tdi golf has been shuddering for awhile now so I haven't been letting my wife drive it. She's the main cause.

Anyway, this morning upon startup, heard a slight squeal for a couple seconds that I'd never heard. Temp was about 42F. Left, got to the light, put clutch in and it stayed down. Manually pulled it back up and pushed it down. Got about 3/4 of the way down and was very hard to push along with a louder squeal and some vibration in the pedal. Tried putting car in first and it would not go. Once I let my foot off the brake and tried again the car started moving slowly even though it wasn't fully engaged in gear. Finally engine speed caught up with clutch speed and it went into gear.

Bled clutch and checked fluid level but get same squeal and clutch won't go down all the way.

Is this as easy as a clutch replacement or something else?

TIA

Welcome to the forum. welcometomyturbodies

Either way it looks like the gearbox has to come out to inspect the clutch and release arm as it looks like in the VW TDI clutch and flywheel FAQ the arms are prone to failure latter in life.
