Hello!

I'm about 2 weeks into my new Mk6 Jetta TDI highline and have been enjoying all the posts and information on the site. I can add some information to the different FAQ's about the white DIS displays. 2011 TDI Highline's in Canada do not have the DIS+ (taller than wider white display with door open) unless they have NAV. I didn't get NAV ;) so the display is wider than taller and there are only two gauges - picture is available. I have the RCD510 (Premium 8) radio instead which is lacking any phone integration.

A couple of questions:

I can get an Mk6 steering wheel (red stitching) and air bag with MFSW controls left and right. Will that work on my Mk6 car which has only left MFSW controls and stalk buttons for trip computer?

I'm fairly certain I have the 9W7 bluetooth which is supposed to show the callers in the DIS+ (which I don't have) If I upgrade the instrument cluster but not the radio which is an RCD510 will the phone functions/convenience menu work in the instrument cluster DIS? This is a pricey upgrade, how can I be sure before going ahead?

I also looked into swapping the radio for the RNS315 - but the dealer says it requires a new wiring harness which is almost as expensive as the radio - $3500.

And before anyone says it - yes - I should have bought the car with the NAV and avoided this issue!

I have plans for a few other convenience upgrades: Homelink mirror or visor, HID's, USB outlet in console (anyone done this?)

Any info would be appreciated!

Answers in Bold. There are quite a few technical questions so I'm moving your post to mk6 section.

It depends on what your steering wheel control module part number is. You can use VCDS to look it up. If it's compatible it's plug play. If not you need a new control module. I believe it should be compatible.

I'm fairly certain I have the 9W7 bluetooth which is supposed to show the callers in the DIS+ (which I don't have) If I upgrade the instrument cluster but not the radio which is an RCD510 will the phone functions/convenience menu work in the instrument cluster DIS? Take a look at the module under the pass seat and look at the part number to confirm but 99% sure it's 9w7. The instrument cluster will show info. You need to have dealer install because the instrument cluster needs to be programmed with the immobilizer and the mileage reset.

I also looked into swapping the radio for the RNS315 - but the dealer says it requires a new wiring harness which is almost as expensive as the radio - $3500.

They are technically correct because you don't have the GPS antenna on roof and wire for it. In reality, you can add a $15 GPS antenna from ebay and stuff it under the dashboard behind the radio. Other than that, it's plug-play, no adapters needed.

And before anyone says it - yes - I should have bought the car with the NAV and avoided this issue!

USB outlet would best be done through MDI. HID: VW hasn't released the OEM yet....
Homelink mirror- you could probably use an aftermarket Gentex mirror and attach it yourself. There's a writeup in the mk5 section which you could probably use. If you do a step by step pictorial on how to install in your mk6 it will qualify for the writeup contest, full rules-guidelines in general forum

Any info would be appreciated!

Thanks chittychittybangbang,

On the steering wheel based on your step by step it seems the new steering wheel will have the extra plug for the right side MFSW controls, not the car? I'll pull the air bag when I get a chance and confirm.

I pulled the 9W7 and confirmed it is part number 7P6 035 730 C (Sw version 0440) - a Google search seems to confirm that is the correct part for 9W7. So a good start.

As the MFA+ from the NAV equipped units have a compass and display song titles(i think), caller id and phone book - How do I determine which combination of these features will work with the RCD 510 (not NAV) and for the features that don't work, do they just show blank or throw errors. Eg the compass? Or the phone book - is the NAV holding that or the 9W7?

I'll have a part number from a Canadian 2011 NAV instrument cluster I can share soon.

Good point on the MDI - it would be great if it could have both an iPod interface and USB at the same time, but that doesn't seem likely.

I have been looking at the Gentex mirror, just not sure I like the adaptor plate and they don't seem to sell a VW specific model. Maybe the dealer can remove the old mount from the windshield?

If the dealer doesn't know how to add the NAV they won't know how to remove the windshield mirror mount. They require a new windshield and since the new Jetta doesn't come with an auto dimming mirror they'll tell you it's non-existent. So why didn't you just get the car with the nav package?

They claim they know how, but $8k+ to do the upgrade including the instrument cluster and steering wheel.

On not getting the NAV at purchase: I have a Garmin nuvi which I like and didn't need a factory NAV. The sales guy told me I would get caller ID/phone book with the 9W7 - now of course I know he was wrong. I spend a lot of time in my car making/receiving calls and live in Ontario where not using handsfree costs $155 ticket! I'm trying to get the dealer to live up to their commitment, but so far no luck.

Tell them you'll pay for parts but they must pay for labor. A saleman lied? Noooooo.....

The plug is the same but you the harness is different for the extra button. To be honest, it's possible that if your car has removeable blanks on the right side, you might even be able to add the button and harness and do a coding change. However, I haven't heard of anyone converting the right side to add buttons. It might be possible but maybe not.

If you remove the airbag you'll see a difference between left side button area and right side. If the blank is removeable maybe....

The part number for the right side buttons is : 5c0 959 538 a (5c0959538a). The screw is n 909 680 02 (n90968002)

I'm only getting 1 control module part number for the 2011 Jetta.

For the Golf, the pair of buttons is : 5k0 998 537 b and the right side button is different. In other words, I don't know if you can add just the right button or the pair, or you have to use a new steering wheel from the Golf.

So the part number for the Canadian MFD+/DIS is 5C6-920-850-C (not mine, the full DIS)

On the buttons: I can trade for the GTI wheel and airbag which includes both side buttons. If the harness attached to the buttons is part of the steering wheel then I won't have a problem. If the harness attached to the buttons is part of the car and not replaced when the steering wheel is then it may be short one connector for the right buttons. The GTI wheel is leather vs. the V-tex leatherette that I have so it would be a nice upgrade.

Also I did read in a forum somewhere that adding the right buttons would work at the same time as the buttons on the wiper stalk.

I'll try and look at the GTI MFSW and pull my air bag over the weekend and compare.

I'm sorry to disappoint you but I don't think its as easy as you think to swapping steering wheels, it maybe a steering wheel with an airbag and a few switches but the controllers for these items are also additional. You can easily spend a day searching through ETKA for part numbers and differences and still be none the wiser.

Chittychittybangbang knows the stalk/button MFSW swap better than anyone on this or any other VAG forum. With regard to your 9w7, it will display on the highline MFD+ all by itself and is not dependent on your RCD-510. However, using the phone menu on the MFD+ might seem ok with the stalk, but it's only really practical with the right hand buttons. I have an 09 TDI Sedan and an 09 TDI JSW (the U.S. JSW only comes with a wiper stalk control) and it's tough to navigate the phone menu on the MFD+ with the wiper stalk. At least for me, anyway. And if you use the 9w3 with voice command, the wiper stalk doesn't have the * button you need to initiate voice commands. So I've been considering swapping the wheel and controller to add this to the JSW. Just haven't found the wheel or controller for sale on eBay yet. It would be nice to get the paddle shifters too. And if I could just buy the buttons I'd be happy with that. But I've never seen the buttons for sale anywhere and I can't find the part numbers...

No I don't :) I've just documented it and try to learn more. Something I've found is that there's always someone who knows better.

Aren't the part numbers for the buttons in the writeup? However, you must have a wheel that has removable blanks.

So.. a little progress this weekend. Found the three square 12 mm at Canadian Tire in a set of 4 for $12.

I have picked up the MFSW from the Mk6 GTI, so now I have parts:

5K0 419 091 D - Steering wheel including left/right buttons. (nice Leather w/red stitching)
5K0 880 201 F 81U - Air bag (includes 5K0 971 584 A harness)
and just in case:
5K0 959 655 B - Air bag control unit (just in case mine isn't compatible)

Now all I need is to confirm which air bag controller I have and whether it is compatible - would like to avoid installing the new one if not needed. Not sure where it is either.. will look in the forums.

Not sure if this belongs in a new thread or not..

Another question: 9W7 features with RNS-315, RNS-510 and RCD-510 radio head units:

The 9W7 shows the phone book, call display, etc on an RNS-315 or RNS-510
The 9W7 shows the phone book, call display, etc on MFD+ displays (even when RCD-510 is installed - so it is going over the CAN Bus)
Kufatec has a bluetooth module that shows the phone book, call display, etc on the RCD-510

Why doesn't the 9W7 show on the RCD-510 - could it be coded? Why wouldn't VW have coded it?

I did not realize the Nav Canadian Highline came with a full MFD, can you post a picture of your dash?
My dash looks like the picture I posted (except in Km) I'm still hoping to get the full MFD shortly - but it won't be from a Canadian Jetta TDI Highline because you are correct the NAV DIS in not the enhanced taller than wider version.

I just received a VCDS and checked my car - unfortunately I was misled (again), the Canadian highline DIS is the same for both NAV and non-NAV. Where I was able to edit my previous posts I have, to correct this info.

So 2 questions:

1) Is there another VW vehicle that has the full DIS that would be able to be swapped into my car? (Ie same size, shape, interface, in Km's) Golf maybe?

2) Still going to swap the MFSW - Where do I determine if the new airbag works with my 5C0 959 655 E airbag controller. Reading the forums, the chasis code is different than the GTI one I have, but the 959 655 are the same and the version is now E instead of B.

Had a little time this evening, so I used the VCDS to do an auto scan and found an error with the 08 Auto HVAC - 03933 - Control Circuit for Seat Heating; Front
011 - Open Circuit - Intermittent. Fortunately it was logged at 346 Km, so nothing I could have done today!

Feeling ambitious I replaced the steering wheel and airbag with the GTI MFSW. Initially an error with the Power Steering Assist, but a quick test drive resolved that. No coding required! Thanks to chittychittybangbang for the howto - worked perfectly. So far only the up/down buttons work (same as stalk) until I can see if I can find an MFA+.

Is there anything in the coding?

Full screen DIS: the Jetta GLI is direct fit, full screen.

You can only edit the first post or posts made within the last 48 hours for archiving. I didn't want to correct someone living in Canada since you may know something I don't. But that's what I thought:)
