I'll be replacing the brake pads and rotors all around for my 06 Jetta (281,000 kms) and I understand that I need an M14 triple square bit for the rear brake caliper removal. I have discovered that these things are hard to come by. I was wondering if a 14 mm torx would work as an alternative.

It might but it can also strip the bolt. Autozone and NAPA sell triple square bits so I would just run down and use that. That bolt is pretty important for the brakes so I'd want to make sure the new one is used and torqued right :) See the FAQ article for a DIY.
