Hi all not sure if this is where to post but going for it any way

Was driving home last Friday all this normal as usual put the foot down a little and car started to die off slower and slower. Puff of white smoke and died on side of the road won't start

Car cranked and cranked but never would never just bite


Got it brought to local garage

Fault code P0087 fuel rail pressure too low

No pressure coming from HPFP changed sensors on rail first nothing

Then got a 2nd pump off a friend fitted it fault gone but no start still

Took off and checked lines have metal flakes in fuel lines

Any one come across this and what to do

Have a VW golf TDI that had the same symptoms you describe. Very hard to start, and idle very rough if you could get it going. Could hear a unpleasant sound like a bad bearing or something from the engine if it was running.

Had it towed to the dealer, and they ended up saying that one of the fuel pumps died, and sent metal shards down the line. They ended up having to replace the High Pressure and Low pressure fuel pump, all the fuel lines, fuel filter housing... every thing that touched the fuel except the gas tank. Said all the lines had to be replaces else the metal would destroy the next pump installed. Might be able to clean them really good, to save a little $$$. Mine was still covered under warranty from the emissions class action lawsuit, else it would have been about $7,000 USD. Few months later they ended up having to replace the fuel injectors (also under warranty), might have been a result of the the fuel pump failure as they did not do that in the prior service.
