I've recently bought an old 1998 A3 1.8 Sport (petrol) so sorry but the problem appears to be common on nearly all VWs and Audis with immobilisers.

Occasionally (happened 3 times in 6 weeks) the immobiliser kicks in when I go to start the car- flashing orange immob light and engine cuts after 1 second.

So far the trick of switching on and waiting 20 minutes has cleared the fault but my worry is that one day this won't work.

Can anyone explain how this fix works and maybe give me somes clues on how to fix it permanently?

Thanks Seatman I've read through that and learnt a lot more about how things work. I guess it's time to check the wiring for bad contacts as that seems most likely.
