nice, too bad it won't come with quattro!

http://www.autoblog.com/2009/01/11/detroit-2009-audi-confirms-a3-tdi-for-us-launch-in-late-2009/

Audi has finally confirmed what's been rumored since last fall's cross-country mileage marathon. The A3 TDI is indeed coming to America later this year. A pair of A3s were included in the marathon group and achieved mileage figures that regularly topped 50 mpg. The A3 will use the same 140 hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder diesel current motivating the Volkswagen Jetta TDI. Getting 40 mpg or more with the A3 TDI shouldn't be difficult in normal driving, and adding the powerful and efficient diesel should help the slow-selling A3 get more of a foothold in the US market.

It won't come with quattro since it uses the same engine as the Jetta TDI and it costs money to have it certified in a different setup for quattro. Probably not enough to justify. It will be interesting how the pricing compares to the Jetta though.

So other than the LED running lights and the interior, how is it different to the driver? The a3 isn't a good seller.

Who said it won't come with quattro? The first one will be FWD but after that they might make one.
cheaper for testing to bring it to the US

my guess is that it'll be a hatchback jetta but with a nicer interior and features and different suspension settings.

You can probably option it how you want - real leather, HID lights, etc.. And at least the chassis is set up for AWD.

With a more upscale Jetta coming, it might have some serious overlap unless they really give it something other than 4 rings...

The smart thing to do would be to bring the Audi A4 first. It's their best seller and you could use the same engine. No need for a V6 TDI.

Well I still think "wait until it's on the dealer lot". The bad economy and small market for the A3 make me believe that it's probably not coming. Why even bring the A3? You rarely see them compared to the A4. The A4 is the volume seller.

The A3 TDI has been added to the Audi website and it says 45 mpg.

"coming late 2009, 25% fewer emissions than gasoline"
IMO, big mistake by not putting this engine in the A4. So what if it has increased emissions, the V6 TDI also uses a urea system so there's no additional cost putting it on the A4 2.0L TDI.

BMW and MB alread have diesels, Audi is lagging here.my two cents

I'm putting together a list of A3 TDI info, reviews, differences, and revisions vs the gas A3, A4, and the VW Jetta/Golf, will post when done. If you know of any specifics or requests, please post here.
