Hi, Just replacing the cylinder head on my 2004 2.0 tdi audi due to possible crack / porous alloy, water into the oil sytem.

Does anyone know the torque settings for the cylinder head ,cams and cam belt and any other related setting and advise I should take note of.

Where in the UK are you?

Audi A3 (03-) 2,0D TDI PD 2003-08 Engine code: BKD

Cylinder head Renew bolts: Yes

Stage 1: Tighten: 40 Nm
Stage 2: Tighten: 60 Nm
Stage 3: Tighten: 90°
Stage 4: Tighten: 90°

Camshaft sprocket/gear

Sprocket bolts: 25Nm
Centre bolt: 100Nm

Camshaft carrier/cap

Sprocket bolts: 25Nm
Centre bolt: 100Nm

Camshaft/rocker cover: 10Nm

Rocker shaft: 20 Nm+90°, Use new bolts.

Timing Belt:

Tighten tensioner pulley nut. Tightening torque: 20 Nm + 45°

Tighten bolts of each camshaft sprocket. Tightening torque: 25 Nm.

Tighten camshaft sprocket centre bolts. Tightening torque: 25 Nm.

Tighten bolts of each camshaft sprocket bolts. Tightening torque: 25 Nm.

Tighten RH engine mounting bracket bolts. Tightening torque: 45 Nm + 90°. Use new bolts.

Tighten crankshaft pulley bolts. Tightening torque: 10 Nm + 90°. Use new bolts.

Engine mounting bolts Fig. 24. Tightening torque: 50 Nm.

Engine mounting bolts Fig. 25. Tightening torque: 20 Nm + 90°. Use new bolts.

Engine mounting bolts Fig. 26. Tightening torque: 60 Nm + 90°. Use new bolts.

You may need to see the diagram for Fig numbers though engine mountings aren't that critical?

Tighten bolt securing lower torque reaction link to subframe. Tightening torque: 100 Nm + 90°. Use new bolt.

Torque settings

Hi Keith,

Thank you for the information you kindly provided it is most appreciated.
I will let you know on Tuesday how things have worked out, and if the new head has resolved the water issue, lets hope and pray it has with a little VDT !!!!

Can you figure out what the torques mean to or do you want a picture?

Opps!

"Cylinder head Renew bolts: Yes

Opps! Be careful!

Tighten the head bolts only by 90', NOT 90°. 90' (minutes) are equal to 1.5°. 90°/60= 1.5°

Tightening by 90 minutes makes no sense. These are expansion bolts. The torque angle depends on the engine. Some have 90°, some have 90° plus 90 °. The data given by Keith should be fully reliable. Else care for a factory manual.
