Using a regular water for what? For engine coolant? For finding the coolant leak?

Is it a crack? It could be the freeze plug. Are you sure it's not the EGR hoses or cooler or is it actually part of the core engine block?

You have to use a 50/50 mix of VW's G12 coolant and distilled water. Straight water or coolant will overheat the engine. Where is the right joint? On the coolant flange coming off the head or the EGR cooler?
