hi, i have just converted a chain driven oil pump/balance shafts to gear driven. i borrowed proper timimg tool for balance shafts and locked up timing belt sprockets as usual. when i start the engine it sounds as noisey as it was before with chain and broken tensioner. when revved up to 1500rpm the noise disappears and returns again when idle. also a slight whinning noise. is this the new gears whinning?. anyone any ideas on these noises?.

It sounds like the gears aren't set correctly. Did you set the backlash of the idle gear? This is just going off the DIY in the FAQ, have you seen it out? The gears should not be louder than the chains.

It should not be loud at all, there are videos in the FAQ article of Passats before and after. Yours should sound similar.

Make sure that the idle gear is tightened down and was pressed firmly as shown in the procedure. If not, the backlash will be wrong and it will get messed up. The balance shaft could also be out of phase.
