My 98 Jetta instrument cluster temp gauge pwrs up to the lowest temp indication when key is turned on - then that is where it sits all day long. I am wondering where the sensor is that drives the temp gauge and does it like go through a relay - I have the red Bentley manual but I could not find the gauge listed in schematics at back of book - it should be a straight forward system to check but - these German schematics give me the fits! Any suggestions and help is very much appreciated - if it turns out that I need to replace my gauge how hard is it to take cluster out and what is best way to do so?
Thanks for your time!

I believe that it's on the coolant flange coming off the driver's side head. The manual says that if you put an ohmmeter on it, resistance should go down as the engine warms up.
