ALH injection pump or injection pump removal - to clear some things up, I don't suggest a pump swap unless you: can afford to have your car down for long, feel like getting every last drop of efficiency out of the car, plan on putting an 11mm head on it.

It's nowhere near economical to just replace the pump for a leak or to restore lost efficiency. Just remove and reseal if you have a leak. However, if you want to move to an 11mm head, this is a good idea. In addition, if your pump is truly bad and you need a new one, buying a "take off" pump that someone is selling off an ALH can be more economical than buying a used one and then having it rebuilt.

water pump removal and replacement and intermediate shaft seal replacement - these used to be 1 writeup but I split them into 2 just to keep them focused and I had more notes to add. It's possible to remove the whole intermediate shaft by loosening 2 motor mounts, raising the engine a little and pulling the shaft straight out.

Yes but stuff happens.

Again, I suggest that if your pump is leaking, just reseal it. Only if there's a serious problem with it does it need replacement. Or if you want to go to the next level of power, you need more fueling (and of course more air). A 11mm injection pump from an ALH can be swapped with this procedure.

Shouldn't the injection pump last the life of the car?
IMO, it should be good for 300-400,000 miles. Bad fuel, water in your fuel, electrical shorts, etc., can kill the pump.

There is always a little bit of fuel in the pump so even if you run the fuel lines dry, the pump should stay lubricated.

The quantity adjuster, the top half of the pump, can break and if it does, it's worth it to get a new pump.

I don't know how much better a brand new pump would be and what increase in fuel economy you'll get, but like chitty said, it's not economical at all. That's like buying a new car every 100,000 miles to save fuel. It will be small and not worth it.
