Hello,

I'm the proud new owner of a 2011 Jetta Sportwagen TDI. In the Multi Function Display there is a Service Interval display with Miles and Days until service. Both have dashes rather than numbers. When I try to reset them as per the manual on page 20 nothing changes. Shouldn't this have started counting down the day I picked up the car with only 13 miles on it? I now have over 500 miles. I called the dealer and they just repeated what the manual said. Does anyone else have this problem or any suggestions?

Thanks,

Marc

So there are no numbers at all? Maybe they set it so that it won't trip those annoying reminders. I don't have a 2011 but here are some suggestions: Is there an option to reset it through the MFI menu? Do you have a VAG-COM tool? It can reset it.

I went back to the dealership, Quirk VW in Braintree, MA. The service manager sat in the car and did the exact same thing I did and tried to reset the service interval through the MFD. No change, still no values displayed for either mileage or days remaining to next service. So he got his foreman. He sat there and did the same thing and then announced it wouldn't start counting down until I'd reached a thousand miles. That doesn't sound right. My acquaintance has the same car but it's a DSG automatic and a month older than my 6 speed manual. His car had values right out of the dealership and he showed me pictures taken when he photographed every part of the car (good idea) to show that when it only 300 miles on it. Plus nothing in the owner's manual says anything about waiting a thousand miles. So I called VW and they gave me a case # and said the regional case manager would call me by end of day tomorrow.

same problem

I'm in the Boston area and have the same exact thing on my sportwagen tdi manual. build date 2/2011. I'm at 400 miles now. I'll wait to hear what you find out. Maybe someone forgot to do something at the port on ours?

Just got a call from a Marcel at VW customer service. He wanted to confirm some facts, said he didn't have an answer yet but was working on it, and would call me back Monday. Very amiable and friendly. He also wanted to confirm exactly what the dealership had said...that the countdown mileage and time remaining would appear after a thousand miles. It sounded like he'd never heard that one before. Mine has a build date of 17 January. I'll post as soon as I hear anything else. Please see the photo of the service reminder in action with less than a thousand miles on it. That's from my friend's DSG Automatic in January. The other photo is mine yesterday. I'll post again after I've heard back from them.

yup, my 2011 tiguan looks like the picture on the left, the 2011 sportwagen like the one on the right. i don't buy the it will go away after a few miles (i was told that too). i figure it won't go away until my first oil change when they reset it with the vag-com! but if i can get it to normal sooner, that would be good too.

I did not buy the car from Boston VW in Watertown, but that is the dealer that received mine from the port in Rhode Island You can tell from the Window sticker. I know you said you bought from Quirk Braintree, but was yours by any chance originally another dealer's from the window sticker?

Not sure this is helpful, but on my 2007 Audi A4 it just shows --- on both days and kilometers left until ive driven about 500-1000kms since reset. When you reset it because you think something is wrong you have to wait another 500-1000km. I use vcds and this is printed on their homepage (but it doesnt specify how far you have to drive, just "some distance").

My advice is to not try and reset it again and drive atleast 1000 miles and a few weeks before you think something is wrong

I think this service reminder is :BS not for the way it does it for the way it counts it. Now I didn't notice you could show this info in the MFD menus for a couple of months.

I had my first service a couple of weeks ago. I forgot to check the next service info for a couple of days but when I did it said 379 days or 9300 miles. Its a bleeding computer doesn't it know how many days in a years or add up miles and next service is current mileage 6k plus 10k?

I've just checked it and it says 8900 miles 346 days and I've done 600 miles since the service.

As Gadifer's first picture shows the date a miles don't add up. The crap that you have to do 1000 miles before anything shows is more :BS.

Go back to the dealers and let them sort it.

It was from Quirk's NH dealership. They brought it down to Braintree for me since it had the color, transmission, and premium package I wanted but the sticker clearly shows it was a Quirk car from the beginning.

Keith...the computer doesn't just do 10000 miles or 365 days...it actually monitors oil quality using sensors and your driving patterns. That's how it calculates the time till next service. It will keep adjusting this way until your service is due. Its a precise method of calculating your true service requirement. I believe in the VCDS you can make it just count days and miles instead of using quality sensors and driving patterns. I'd much rather use the default calculation.

I'm not sure why this display is not working on the OP and others...make sure a scan for codes is done, although you would think if it was a bad sensor or some other problem that it would set a check engine light etc.

I know you guys have been saying you have reset the service reminder from the MFD, but have we reset it using the VCDS scan tool, it looked like even when the dealer tries it they reset from the MFD. Try resetting with VCDS tool and see if that has more success.

If you google it for Longlife Servicing.pdf and the first one in the list you will read
However, your car is also capable of being serviced at a more traditional time of 12 months or 10,000 miles (which ever occurs first), this regime is known as Time and Distance. Your Retailer will explain both systems and can reset your car to the Time and Distance regime at the Pre Delivery Inspection if you wish.
So if its the shorter 10k or 12 months service why does it show 9300 miles or 379 days after a service? They still don't add up.

Then it says
With the LongLife service regime it could be anywhere between 9,000 miles or 12 months up to a maximum of 20,000* miles or 24 months, depending on the way the car is driven and/or its operating environment. The Time and Distance regime will be around 10,000 miles or 12 months (which ever occurs first).
So why do they drop it to 9000 miles there, I think VW need some numeracy skills. I've had this argument on other forums about service intervals and 10k is plenty for me.

Keith, I've read all about this in the past and it depends on how you drive and other factors...its non linear...it doesn't say 9000 for the long service regime, it says between 9000 and 24000 as you quoted. The numbers are constantly changing in the display based on how you drive. All that matters is that when it tells you that its time to service the vehicle then its time to service the vehicle. If you don't want the longlife regime (I don't understand why anyone wouldn't follow this) then you can just get it serviced every 10,000 miles or 12 months, but you have to modify the service program in VCDS to follow the time and distance regime.

I don't understand what this argument you speak of can be about...not to be blunt, but if you understand how the system works there's really no argument to have. It is possible that certain driving conditions like driving short distances and infrequent use of the car or driving in extreme climates can cause the service interval to be as low as 9,000 miles. There is nothing here that doesn't make sense to me.

To the OP...how is the oil level? Its not overfilled above the line is it? Something tells me this might have an effect...not based on anything other than gut.

I had the dashed lines on my 2011 sportwagen TDI/DSG when I picked it up with 125 miles on it, but the display started showing mileage and days sometime around 500 miles +- (with no input from me) and has been counting down every 100 miles since. Great driving car!

I know what I said I quoted it.

If you know what your talking about then carry on that me finished with this thread as its becoming pointless. I've suggested if Gadifer isn't happy take it back to the dealer.

VW followed up with me with no concrete result. They just don't have an answer. As it's still under 500 miles since I tried the reset I'll just leave it alone and hope it comes on by itself soon. I just don't want it to indicate something else is wrong...airbags or something important. But if it's the case that it takes a few hundred miles for the reminder to come on then that should be stated in the manual and VW personnel should know it.

Thanks for the feedback. I hope to post soon that the reminder is on and that this thread is history.

I had the same issue on my 2011 JSW TDI DSG. I noticed it on my way home from the dealership right after picking up the car. I contacted the dealership and I was told that it should show up in a couple of days but that did not happen. They followed up with a phone call in a couple days and I told them that nothing had changed. I was asked to keep driving any not worry until the 90 day courtesy vehicle check because I lived about an hour away from the dealership. However, about a week later, i.e., maybe 11 or 12 days and about 400 miles since I picked up the car, the service information showed up with 9600 miles and 362 days to go. It has been counting down since then.

Mine finally flipped on at 900 miles. I have suggested to VW that they should amend their user's manual to explain this or, better yet, make it start counting down from the day the first owner drives off the lot.
