From what I understand from former VW employees, VW corporate doesn't give detailed instruction on how to do the pre delivery checklists. As a result, how well your car is inspected varies greatly from dealer to dealer. In some cases they didn't do many of the items on the checklist even though they charged you for it. One of the most obvious symptoms is failure to remove the front strut locks. These are black or orange bumpers that lock the springs for shipment. If the front rides hard and high or you hear a noise from the front, check for the bumpers. This is what they look like before removal (on right) and after being mangled from driving around (orange, on left) because the dealer didn't remove them. It can dislodge the shock boot and cause clunking in the struts.

To break in the engine, follow the recommendations in your owner's handbook. Some general tips about engine break in and busting myths can be seen here: 1000q: engine break in and busting break in myths.

You must use 507.00 VW spec engine oil. Because this is a new spec oil, you must order it from an online supplier or from the dealer. DO NOT trust the dealer to comply with this requirement, even under their 3 years/36,000 mile free maintenance program! Dealer techs are busy and often make mistakes! Always check with the exact tech working on your car which oil he is using.

VW 507.00 engine oil is also needed because it's very low ash. Too much ash can result in less lifespan of the diesel particulate filter (DPF) system. See 1000q: DPF FAQ for details on the clean diesel system. It's not possible to delete the DPF or bypass the DPF filter on a JSW TDI or GSW TDI without drastic changes to the engine management computers.

Until there's further evidence and testing for oils other than 507.00 VW spec, I strongly suggest sticking to the owner's manual suggestion. Not using this spec oil may give the dealer grounds to not honor warranty claims on the engine. Don't let them tell you that another oil is OK to use because it's you who has to prove any problem down the road, not them! Some common oils that are VW 507.00 spec are Castrol SLX Professional LL03, Motul specific VW 507.00, Total Quartz Ineo 5w30 507.00, and Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5W-30. The part numbers for 5w-30 507.00 engine oil are:
VW# gv52195a1 (g v52 195 a1) for .5 liter
VW# gvw052195m2 (gvw 052 195 m2) for 1 liter
VW# gvw052195m4 (gvw 052 195 m4)for 5 liters

Here is the TSB which lists engine oils approved by VW - right click, save as or click to view (scroll down to the bottom for 507 oils)

Some TDI have gotten condensation in the intake which settles in the intercooler. In cold weather, this condensation can freeze and cause rough cold running or harder start. The main symptom is that once you start moving, the engine rpm goes up which moves the intake air faster and the engine stumbles. This will not throw a check engine light/malfunction engine light. The danger is that if too much fluid makes it from the intercooler to the engine, once inside the engine cylinder, can hydrolock the engine and bend the engine cylinder rods. This is discussed in this thread: http://www.myturbodiesel.com/forum/f7/cr-cold-weather-inspection-4197/ The creamy look is the mixture of water and oil condensation. The fix is a repair kit which includes a new intercooler, sensor, lines, and what appear to be a valve to blow out water.

Some dealerships, even luxury car dealerships, do a bad job detailing new cars due to rushed jobs and dirty equipment. Bad detailing can even damage your new car's finish. I recommend washing, claybar, and then waxing your new car yourself. This removes the corrosive railroad dust if they came by rail, spray/sand while sitting at the port, and road detritus during transport. See detailing tips at 1000q: washing and wax your car , 1000q: claybar your car.

Carefully inspect your new car for dents, scratches, misaligned panels, haloing or spiderwebbing of the paint (see 1000q: polishing your paint for more details and pictures), or other damage. This is not acceptable on a brand new car. Don't let the happy ether from new car delivery interfere with overlooking possible defects or damage. A professional detailing will remove any rail dust, sea salt/sand, or road detritus accumulated during transport. Waxing the car will only coat over these paint impurities and seal them in.
Very minor and consistent orange peel (a slight/wavy texturing of the paint surface) can be normal. Inconsistency across panels indicates bad paint and possibly damage cover ups. The paint finish on a new car should be clear of swirl marks and other defects.

Don't worry about waxing your new car. New cars from the factory are baked in an oven after painting and they had plenty of time during delivery in case you feel you want to wait before waxing. Body repair or body shop paint needs to cure for at least a month before waxing because it's slightly different and can't be baked in an oven or else the interior and all the plastics on the car would melt. High quality body shops can do a better paint job than the factory, so don't worry that they don't bake the paint. Some owners have reported moisture spots which are trapped under the clearcoat. It's visible only at certain angles and can be removed with a hairdryer on low heat. If it doesn't come back that's it. If it does, immediately report it to the dealer.

Double check your insurance rates. All TDI in the US/Canada have 3 sets of airbags and may have optional rear lower side airbags. They also have standard immobilizer anti theft, anti theft alarm, shoulder harness seat belts, ABS, and stability control (std on highline trim in Canada), so see if insurance discounts apply.

It's normal for the speedometer to read slightly higher than actual speed. German cars tend to have fast speedometers to account for build variations and so that they don't read lower than actual speed. See 1000q: speedometer fix for the repair. The odometer reading should be correct and is a separate display from the speedometer for warranty and maintenance purposes. Most report that the 2009 and newer fuel economy meter are accurate. Even still, the best way to calculate fuel economy is to fill the tank all the way, drive, and then fill the tank all the way at the same exact pump. Different pumps may shut off at slightly different points which can change your calculated fuel economy. If the mpg meter is inaccurate, you can adjust it using the procedure here: 1000q: fuel economy gauge adjustment.

Other misc. stuff to know after taking delivery
Power modifications

I would wait until the warranty expires and power tuning matures for this engine before trying it on my own car. Because of more sophisticated engine management and the totally new emissions control system, the greatest power modification available right now for the 2.0L TDI CBEA and CJAA engine is chip tuning. Early chip tuning is producing an estimated 160 hp and 290 lb-ft torque. The 2010s have different engine management vs. the 2009s so they require a new tune.

After you shut off the engine or are stopped at a light: if you hear the engine fan running AND you smell something overheating at the tailpipe, this is the diesel particulate filter (DPF) burning off accumulated soot. If the DPF doesn't get hot enough during a highway run or normal driving, it injects some fuel to burn off trapped particulates. If you shut off the engine in the middle of a filter regeneration cycle you may notice some odor while it burns off. It appears that it does a hot regen cycle about once every 450-600 miles depending on use. More information can be found in the DPF FAQ for Audi and Volkswagen Jetta TDI.

The soundproofing on mk4 cars rubbed and often caused rust at the top of the fenders. Your mk5 VW TDI also has this and it's possible it could also happen on yours. See 1000q: fender rust solution for the repair.

The DRL light should be lit on the instrument cluster. This means it's on. If a light bulb burns out, the MFD will display a text message.

If you hold the key in the door to unlock or lock, it will open or close all the windows and sunroof. If you enable comfort windows, it will also let you do it with the remote key fob. See 1000q: comfort window remote for details if you have a 2009. They changed the electrics for 2010 so if you have a 2010, see 1000q: 2010 comfort windows. Here's a demo. See the "how to" index for more handy VCDS modifications on a Sportwagen.

Never put your keys in the trunk because if you open the trunk, put your keys in with some bags, etc., and then close the trunk, the doors will be locked with the keys in the trunk.

Some have had defective high pressure fuel pumps. This is supposedly linked to a certain production range but VW isn't saying much about it. If you open the fuel filter canister at the 20,000 mile change interval and see tiny metal flakes, your fuel pump is disintegrating. It should immediately be brought to the attention of the dealer while under warranty. I suggest keeping all your fuel receipts in case they accuse you of putting gasoline in the car. This has happened a few times and the owner's insurance has been left as the only remedy. Diesel fuel is an oil and lubricates the fuel system. The entire fuel system must be replaced because the flakes have already damaged the injectors and pumps. See 1000q: how to replace the fuel filter for tips on opening the filter canister.

A few people have had pinhole leaks in the high pressure fuel system which showed up early on. This results in a fuel leak and diesel odor. If this happens to you, report it to the NTSHA since any potential fire hazard should be reported. Here are a few threads which discuss this - it appears to show up on #2 injector line often and it could be a design weak spot. http://www.myturbodiesel.com/forum/f19/fuel-leak-6757/ and http://www.myturbodiesel.com/forum/f19/2011-vw-jetta-fuel-leak-6919/

******NOTE This pinhole leak problem was addressed by the recall mentioned on the last page. It's since been fixed.

If they replace the fuel tank make sure the install plugs are removed. If they aren't you'll hear sucking when you open the fuel filler cap as in this case: http://www.myturbodiesel.com/forum/f19/fuel-tank-vacuum-tank-collapse-18029/

Any diesel engine could experience an engine runaway due to a rare mechanical problem. Diesel engines are throttled by fuel and not air so if they malfunction and start running off their own engine oil, it causes a feedback cycle which causes the engine to race until it self destructs. The car will accelerate if it's in gear. If you ever experience this, shut off the ignition as soon as it's safe and practical and take it to a mechanic before starting it again. Read more about the causes of diesel engine runaway at 1000q: runaway engine FAQ.

When you turn the key on and off you may hear a high pitched electric sounding whine from the front of the engine for a few seconds. This is the EGR valve at the front of the engine rotating to self calibrate itself.

The heated side view mirrors only work if the outside air temp is below 68oF.

The sunvisor pulls out as an extra adjustment. The passenger side doesn't. It does on earlier Jetta and new Golf so you can swap them if you want this feature on the right.

If the doors were locked, the front doors will open with the first pull of the interior door handle. The rear interior door handles require 2 pulls - the first unlocks the door. The second pops the door open.

The panoramic sunroof has pinch protection (anti-decapitation :)). If it gets stuck, pull/tilt the switch down and hold it in the "close" position. If it doesn't work, try again and hold. If the blind gets stuck, repeatedly press and hold the "close" position. There is supposedly a 4mm allen wrench emergency close socket on the sunroof motor. If you manually close it you have to reset pinch protection and position settings. If the salesman didn't point it out, you have to turn and hold the sunroof beyond the dot to get it fully open.

The LED on the bluetooth overhead console does not work if you have 9w7 bluetooth as a retrofit or from the factory (standard 2011 and newer).

The new common rail engine uses a timing belt and will need a deluxe/full timing belt change every 120,000 miles. This includes changing all idler pulleys/rollers, water pump, timing belt tensioner, and timing belt. If you do it yourself, parts should cost about $400. Since many VW dealers are not yet experienced with diesels and the new TDI engine, ask around for a TDI expert before going to the dealer. Dealers not experienced with TDI engines have damaged engines in the past due to lack of experience and bad techs. Expect to pay about $900-1,300 at the dealer for this service.
Some owners report an engine hiccup when warm or engine shudder when at half application. So far VW has not come out with a fix but it's believed to from the EGR (exhaust gas system) cycling.

Because of the newer technology on the mk5 cars, there are many car settings that must be set up during new delivery. CAN BUS technology cars (mk5 VW) come from the factory in sleep mode to prevent battery drain. Sometimes these settings are never configured (dealer error) or reset later. Some examples are the power seat and the power windows/sunroof remote functions. The window pinch protection can even be turned off. These options can be adjusted with a VCDS diagnostic tool (used to be called vag-com) or the dealer can do it. These also happen when you disconnect the battery. Once clue is that the yellow steering wheel symbol showing steering sensor problems and ESP stability control malfunction lights are on. To reset window pinch protection and reset steering and ESP, see 1000q: reset pinch protection and steering sensors.

The engine coolant is "lifetime" G12. Do not mix it with green Prestone or other non compatible coolants. It's a sealed system so if it's low, figure out where the leak is.

The cargo hooks have 3 positions: flat, cargo hook loop, or bag holder. This is shown above. The cargo floor can also be folded into notches on the floor to stand up as a divider.

A common complaint on German cars is fast speedometers. On my car it was 10% fast which is ridiculous. The odometer is correct for warranty and maintenance purposes. See 1000q: high speedometer reading correction to correct this. Because the fuel economy meter is based off the trip computer/odometer, most people say the meter is pretty accurate.

VW uses anti-theft smart keys. To replace a lost smart key on your Volkswagen, you must have the immobilizer chip programmed on the new key or else the engine will shut off after 1 second. The only places which can program an immobilizer chip are the dealer, a few rare independent locksmiths who have the equipment, or with a few aftermarket solutions. See 1000q: immobilizer FAQ for details. The immobilizer chip has nothing to do with the remote keyless entry fob. Don't buy used keys except for parts because the chip can only be programmed once. Again, you can reuse a used remote keyless entry half but the metal key half which contains the immo chip is 1 use only.

Always use the parking brake when parking the car! The best way to use it is to apply it before shifting into park or first/reverse gear. This puts the stress on the parking brake instead of the transmission gears. This also adjusts the rear caliper self adjusting ratchet that VWs use.

16" is minimum wheel diameter that will fit. The front rotors are 312mm in diameter which is the same as the GTI. The same year Jetta/Golf TDI use 288mm rotors.

Safely raise the rear of the car and spin each rear wheel by hand. Stay to the side and don't get under the car or put your hand in a position where it could be crushed if the car falls! Some cars come from the factory with misadjusted parking brakes. Light scraping and touching on the brake rotors is normal, resistance is not normal and should be adjusted by the dealer.

When you shut or start the car, the windshield wipers may readjust themselves a tiny bit. This makes them last longer by not getting bent in one angle. To change the windshield wipers, press the wiper lever after you shut off the car and they will go up to the service position. They should not be over $50 for a pair at the dealer.

The service interval reminder does not work until the odometer passes 900 miles. Until then, it will display only dashes. The manual does not mention this and the reset will not work either.

You can't use truck stop high flow fueling nozzles on the mk5 cars. The high flow fueling nozzles are larger and flow much faster to fill a semi's large fuel tank. Because the larger high flow nozzle won't fit in the TDI fuel tank opening, some fuel can splash out. Try to find and use the small diesel nozzles. You may hear of venting or a ventectomy, this does not apply to this generation of TDI.

I recommend applying a UV-resistant laminate or headlight protector on the headlight lenses. This will prevent pitting and yellowing of the plastic on your new headlights. This is not a VW specific issue because all modern headlights on US cars use DOT approved plastic lenses instead of glass. A paint protecting clear vinyl film over the front of the car is also a good idea but is more expensive than a headlight protector. Professional installation is required and it will prevent chipping of the front. While it does slightly reduce the look of the paint, it's not noticeable at all unless you are closely inspecting it and prevents damage to the paint which is noticeable from a distance. It does not damage the paint at all but cannot be applied to a repainted area or else it can pull off the repainted area.

You may also want to tint the windows. Auto glass blocks UV light but even clear or light tint will block a lot more UV light. Tinting the side windows helps prevent aging of the interior, aging of your skin, adds privacy, and in the event of the window shattering, controls glass particles by holding them to the stick-on film. Tint darkness can come in clear, all the way to dark limo tints, check your local laws for any restrictions. Use only simple soap and water on window tint, never use ammonia based cleaner on the interior of the window where stick-on tint film is applied. Metallic tint will block almost all AM radio reception. The satellite radio antenna and GPS (if equipped) is in the sharkfin antenna on the roof. The regular radio antenna is in the rear window (sedan).

Do not add aftermarket rustproofing since it will void the factory rust warranty. Cars are dipped in anti-rust zinc and have a few layers of paint to prevent rust. While it could still happen and the rust warranty only covers certain kinds of rust, the best thing to do is to wash your car regularly, including the undercarriage. See 1000q: car detailing index for tips on how to avoid scratches and swirl marks from car washing. The best thing to do is to avoid automatic car washes unless they are "touchless".

Exclusive to TDI (not on gas models) is an electric heating strip in the air vent to help warm up the cabin on cold winter mornings. Auxiliary air heater Z35 is inside the climate control assembly and has a 100 amp fuse in the fuse box under the hood. It won't blow hot air but lukewarm air is better than nothing and it will help prevent your frozen breath from obscuring the windshield on super cold mornings.

The air conditioned glove box barely cools at all so don't expect chilled champagne. The cooler is just a tube from the air duct instead of a true refrigeration unit. If you need food or medicine to stay cool, get a portable plug in cooler.

It's a rare problem, but it's possible for the plastic dust cover on the ignition key slot to jam. Try turning the steering wheel to unlock it and if that doesn't work, try pushing while tilting the key towards the front of the car to push the cover to the side. You could also use a pick. Never lubricate a lock cylinder with wet oil, only use a graphite lubricant.

Although the DSG (automatic) transmission (introduced with the 2004 New Beetle TDI) has it's drawbacks, it's still a good automatic compared to previous ones. Shifting is lightening fast and very smooth. However, if you want better mileage and reliability, nothing beats a regular manual transmission. Please read 1000q: DSG FAQ for maintenance, quirks, and other common issues with the DSG transmission. To change the transmission fluid (every 40,000 miles), see 1000q: DSG DIY fluid change.

Some people report hesitation from a stop when the car has a DSG transmission. This is reported to be worst when you are stopped, foot on brake, and quickly step hard on the accelerator pedal. This is believed to be from the DSG clutches slipping. To minimize it, after you take your foot off the brake, wait before stomping on the go-pedal hard or gently press the pedal before pressing it harder.

Some early A5 Jetta TDI used defective clutches which were replaced under recall. Some dual mass flywheels (see 1000q: clutch FAQ for more details) failed or decided to liberate themselves from the engine with spectacular results. The flywheel was revised and this should no longer be as prominent.

Added a note about the 2011 bluetooth LED. It doesn't light up for 2011 because the new bluetooth is 9w7 which for whatever reason, doesn't work with the overhead console.

Added 2012 model year differences. I also overhauled the article top-bottom to reflect some minor changes.

For model year 2012, all JSW TDI now have the MDI ipod adapter standard. The RCD510 radio now has HD radio w/tagging as part of the radio.

The packages are now base, sunroof, sunroof+nav. Sunroof + nav MAY include KESSY (will update once confirmed 100%)

My wife and I are on the verge of buying a 2011 JSW TDI. Is there any indication of when the 2012s might be available? I've searched and searched, but found nothing.

Thanks very much!

The new model year usually starts arriving in late August, September.

Also, the 2011 wagons still come with 2 keys and 1 valet key.

Standard Radio?

I am waiting for the 2012 JSW TDI to get to our local dealer, and I am not going to spring for the nav system. Actually the only extra I intend on paying for is the rear side impact air bags.

Anyway, what radio comes in the car? Does the Ipod connection still come as standard?

Lastly, are there upgrades from VW for the suspension for these MkV based MkVI JSWs? Is it correct that they have the old torsion beam in the back instead of a newer independent rear suspension?

Thanks!

The ipod connection comes standard for 2012. It did not come standard 2009-2011.

Radio is rcd510, standard radio in all US TDI.

The wagon still uses the IRS. You can use VW drivergear suspension or the many aftermarket ones out there, tons of choices.

KESSY confirmed for 2012 if you get the nav+sunroof package.

Also, added a pic of a shattered sunroof. Someone name Madorski let me use his pics of the damage when it shattered spontaneously. This can happen to tempered glass when stressed, imperfect, or damaged.

Warning: If you get the RNS315 GPS system, it does not come with HD radio even though the RNS 510 GPS and RCD 510 radio do come with HD radio. In other words, the RNS315 removes the HD radio feature. This is not clear on VW's site. If you read the RNS315 FAQ article on this website, the comparison chart does show that the 315 doesn't have HD radio.
