2001 octavia 1.9tdi cambelt whine?

Hi there,

I've recently had the cambelt and water pump changed on my skoda octavia 1.9tdi 110, and ever since i picked the car up there is a reasonably loud whining noise coming from the engine bay. This is particularly noticeable when letting the engine drop back to idle after revving it in neutral (not so noticeable when in gear). I am a bit worried that the cambelt might be too tight - is this possible on this engine? Or is the cambelt self tensioning?
The garage also did not replace the engine tray when putting it back together, as it was too damaged to refit. So, the only other possibility i can think of for the source of the whining noise is that maybe it is coming from the ancillary belt, and i just didn't notice it before because the engine tray was doing a good job of sound proofing the engine.
Am i just being paranoid?
Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

Thanks for the answer. Yes, i'm pretty sure my skoda is based on the mk4 golf tdi, so the same info should apply. The timing belt fitting guide looks very comprehensive - I think i will have to take the belt cover off and have a look in... Alternatively i could try and forget about it and if the cambelt goes just take it back to the guy that changed it..!

Someone else changed it, so now that i've got this whining i'm suspicious that it might be coming from the cambelt. As i said in my first post, it's not noticeable when i'm accelerating, but just when i lift off and i let the engine slow down on it's own. It sort of whines it's way back down the rev range.
Question is, will i be able to see the tensioning pulley to see if it's properly lined up, without having to dismantle anything major to get access to it?
