please shed some light on this choice - new car on the way (yippee!) coming in w 17's. what is the advantage over 16s? looks don't matter here - only comfort and performance.

Side-side handling is better since the sidewall is shorter and stiffer. The 16" wheels will be more comfortable because there's more sidewall and the sidewalls can be made softer. Tire choice also plays a big role in comfort and performance. You can browse tire rack for some good reviews.

Define performance - braking? Quick side-side transition?

good 16" tires will outperform bad 17" tires in those categories and be more comfortable.

Also, everything else being equal, 17" wheels +tires have a longer moment of inertia than 16". This reduces comfort and, on a very small level, reduces acceleration and braking capacity.
