the last time i drove the car it ran fine (and there was no indication of any problems)
the car sat unused over the long weekend and when i went to start in this morning to go to work.i turn the key, all dash lights come on as normal but when I turn the key all I haer is a clicking sound. I didn't have time to check anything so i took my truck to work instead.

judging my all of the dash lights working i am assuming the battery is ok.

any ideas?

The TDI needs a strong battery to overcome the high compression of the diesel engine. If the battery is low then the starter won't work. And if the battery is only medium bad and still turns over the engine but not fast enough, the ECU reads the engine speed sensor and won't inject fuel.
