    I just replaced my wastegate actuator on my 01 tdi jetta, how do you set the rod length, without vagcom, is there are preload?

    You don't set the Turbo Actuator (not "waste-gate") rod length using a vacuum pump / gauge... (Mity-Vac or Harbor Freight cheapo version...) The rod should just start moving at 3 to 5.5 inches vacuum... you should also make sure that it's fully open (hitting the stop) at 18 inches and also that the turbo vanes aren't sticking (should have been checked before attaching the actuator...)

    BTW: the old mechanics' trick of holding the old and new actuators back-to-back and making the new rod length equal the old one is the wrong way to do it, as usually when the actuators rust out, the debris inside prevents the diaphragm from fully extending...
