My 100K mile timing belt kit failed at 91K miles. About a foot of teeth are stripped off. The water pump and all the idlers spin freely. I don't know what else could have failed to cause this. Does anyone have any ideas. The car is a 2002 Jetta with 185K miles and is an automatic.

Are you sure it has the upgraded 2003+ longer mileage timing belt parts? How does the tensioner look? Did you take it to a mechanic and where did the parts come from?

If yes and trusted parts source, sounds like it just failed early. Is it possible the belt was wearing somewhere?
