This is a very basic question but the owner's manual that comes with the car is rather rudimentary. We'd like to check the level of the transmission fluid and would like to know if there is a dipstick (and where) or if the level can only be checked by draining. Thank you in advance.

No dipstick on a manual only an auto, you need to jack the car up on stands, two on front and two on rear on a level stable ground.
Then undo the filler bolt plug, the oil should sit just below the bottom of the oil plug bolt hole, that's the max line.

Why do you suspect the fluid is low?

Thank you for the information. There is a high-pitched whirring in the higher gears when she is under load.

Are you certain it's from the transmission, and not the turbo or the intake?

Not certain at all, we are attempting to triage. Not our first manual diesel (still have an '86), but this is our first turbo. Turbo was on the list of potential issues but not much experience with them.

Well, she got stuck in gear and was unable to shift. Car is now in the shop; probably transmission after all.

    No dipstick, inverted fill.

Probably the valve body and clutches.

? Thought it was a manual? At the least something without a valve body?

I can't see signature with Tapatalk, maybe I'm missing something?

Sorry for the delay, folks; holiday and all.

For the transmission suddenly getting stuck with no warning, somehow the output shaft seized internally on the transmission which "Caused clutch pressure plate to explode. Metal cut gearbox and drained gear oil. Flywheel is burned heavily from friction."

Not low on fluid until it damaged itself somehow.
