I have a 1996 VW Jetta TDI which gets very jerky when warm and completely cuts out if put in cruise. It runs smoothly when cold.
Would someone know what could be the problem. VW wants a heck of a lot per hour just to put it in for tests.

Does it only cut out when you use cruise control?

You could do with a VAG-COM\VCDS scan to see if any error codes show up. I believe you can get a free scan at Autozone as they hope you will buy something of them for this service.

Could be a lot. Jerkiness at a specific rpm is often boost leak, could be sensor problem or fueling problem.

    or fuel issues...

autozone type of places tend to scan for free.... BUT they lack vagcom.. and their tool tends to LIE on a tdi.. will tell you miss fire codes and such where a tdi cannot have such stuff... you need to find a local with vagcom..

    Thanks Keith,
Yesterday I put it in cruise when the car got to 90 klph and it did'nt get jerky until it warmed up.
When it does get jerky, I think it may be getting air bubbles in the deisel every time I ask for some power. It only happens when it's warm.
I looked at the deisel pump yesterday...
Is it suposed to have a shroud on the pump??

There's no shroud for the pump but there's an engine cover if that's what you mean

    Hi I'm back,
A friend who has a 1998 VW Jetta tdi told me to check the relay 109 as this could be faulty....
Please would you know, would a 1996 VW Jetta tdi have one of these relays and where would I locate it??

Yes, look under the steering wheel under the dash, remove the relay cover panel, and look for a black relay marked 109 or 601 if you're upside down ;)

The newer one is gray. It controls power to the ECU. However, most of the time it results in stalling which is fixed when the car cools down.

    Hi Chittibangbang,
I asked that question because I could not see a relay 109 or a 601 up side down. today I looked again and also removed the steel panel below the lower cover and my VW Jetta does not have a relay 109 or the upside down 601.
Would there be a problem with a glow plugs or would I just change all four??

    THANKS AGAIN.

can you see the relay panel? I know your car has a relay 109 since I used to have one. This relay doesn't control the glow plugs, it controls power to the ECU.

    Hi,
Yes I can see the relay panel but checked again and no 109 relay.
How do I send a picture of my relay/fuse panel??

    Thanks

    Hi Chittichittibangbang,
I'm not having much luck with this Jetta.....
I've fixed the bubbles in the gas lines.
I'm now having problems with my speedo & tachmeter.
They started playing up a few weeks ago, where I got inmittenent speedo and tachometer, usually when I started the Jetta first thing in the morning it would work, the water temp and gas gauges have allways worked, also the mileage and clock.
Now only the clock works everything else has stopped.
    I deffenetely don't have a 109 relay, the nearest is a 104 in the12 slot.

I hope someone can help me sort this as I'm thinking of getting rid of the car.
