Default Whats a good price for a 2003 TDI Jetta?

Have been talking to a VW dealership in Vancouver BC and they have a 2003 Jetta GLS TDI for sale. I believe they are asking 10 500 CDN for it. The car is a manual, has 156,000km (96,000miles) on it. The dealership has replaced the timing belt, decarboned the engine, replaced some censors, 4 new all season tires and the car has passed their 100+ point inspection. I think that its a good deal but wouldn't mind some feedback. I am going to test drive it tomorrow.

IMHO 100 point inspection means nothing. They check stupid stuff like if the ashtray is empty. They don't actually bring the car up to maintenance standards like changing the power steering fluid, brake fluid, transmission oil, etc.

If they replaced the timing belt did they also replace the rollers and tensioners? Because if they only replaced the belt it's worthless - the rollers or tensioner can fail.

10,000 sounds a bit high IMHO. Search ebay for your local market pricing and you'll get a good idea of market value. After all, the car's only worth what someone will pay.

Also, the car is 10 years old and with that mileage the suspension is starting to wear out. Some new struts and bushings will help that greatly. The front springs will be sagging too but age/mileage isn't horrible yet. remember that when you buy a used car you also have to budget for any catch up maintenance. Check out the FAQ for the mk4 buying guide.

I am thinking of selling my 03, but, I suspect I am not geographically attractive to you! For less than that, with many more extras!

Agree that sounds high.

Even tho you pay a premium for a diesel you don't want to pay to much over book value IMHO.
If you wreak it or something bad the insureance company isn't going to pay you for the premium.
I think i only paid 500 over book value on mine and it had all records with it

About a month ago I bought a red 2003 Jetta in very, very nice condition. This one was garaged most of its life and it shows. I gave a little less than 10k with 104,000 miles.

However.....since all of the maintenance could not be documented I did it all just to establish a baseline. Not cheap but better than ruining the engine.

The dealer I bought it from said the timing belt was "fairly new." After inspection it looks like the original belt to me. I don't plan on taking an chances so mine is going to my TDI guru this weekend for a new TB setup.
