Default Voltage Regulator 02 Jettta

I have a regulator that is not keeping the battery charged.
I put a load on and you can hear the alternator kick in and the voltage goes up.

The alternator looks like a pain to get out.

Can you replace the regulator without pulling the alternator?

Harv.

Welcome to the forum Harv.

No the voltage regulator is mounted in the alternator so you going to have to remove it to do the job properly.

What voltage is it putting out under load and without load? The only electrical load you can apply is switch everything electrical on in the car. The biggest electrical load is when you crank the engine to start it. Once it starts the alternator will bump out maximum current to charge it back up.

It should be between 13.8-14.2 volts. Obviously make sure all electrical connections are clean and sound.

You say its on an 02 Jetta your car spec says 2004 Jetta is that a typo or are you working on an 02 Jetta?

There were (at least) 3 different brands of alternators used in these cars...

Bosch and Valeo have replaceable voltage regulators (although the Valeo ones are hard to find)... Hitachi alternators must be replaced...

I believe some people have been able to replace the voltage regulator with the alternator in the car, but it's very tight in there (especially on the 2002... the 2004 should be easier...)
