Location? Why would you rebuild the entire power plant? They typically last for a long time.

Well, I'm going to be doing a lot of high mileage, high risk trips from MT to Canada and AK in the next couple of years. It's either a brand new car or a new engine and at 25 F-ing thousand dollars for a compact car, a new car isn't even possible. Besides, this way when other components go bad I can replace them with performance parts. I havn't figured out a location yet. After I get a list of specialists I can figure that out.

Here's a list of mechanics who others have used. Be careful because I have seen some of the cars that have come from these mechanics and they had obvious problems that should have been fixed by a real TDI specialist. Other people have had similar complaints or other complaints about customer service. Some of them aren't licensed businesses. That's not a knock on skill level since they might do great work, it's a caution on insurance and liability. It doesn't take anything to get on this recommended list other than a recommendation. https://docs.google.com/View?docID=0...vision=_latest
There's no "certified" recommended list if that's what you were looking for. It sounds like an ambitious project, good luck! |

I'm surprised at the reactions I'm getting from this idea. Maybe it is more than I think it is. I used to rebuild truck engines all the time. I realize that is a different beast than these TDIs but is rebuilding these SO ambitious that it is impractical to the extreme? |

Is the cost:benefit ratio worth rebuilding a good engine?. If you're doing the work yourself it's not that bad but why pay someone else to rebuild the engine when it doesn't need it? What wear parts were you looking to repair? Other than the turbo and camshaft, you don't hear of much getting replaced on these engines. Maybe the flywheel and clutches. You could have the injection pump rebuilt but the major problem is just leaking seals. You just have to replace the small stuff like the vacuum lines and keep up with maintenance.
