Tdi 1.9 Kombi black then white smoke

Afternoon gents and ladies, last night the bus decided to give, need some advise on the issues if any surrounding the Kombi`s.
It`s got 160k on the clock and is an pleasure to own and drive however i need some answers.
There was no warning, just a slug (like fuel starvation) then black diesel smoke, no power and then white smoke. It is currently at the workshop and am awaiting a report.
Are there any other issues around these van`s.

So many things could be wrong it's hard to make a diagnosis without more clues. Could be fuel starvation, could be the pump, could be engine or air supply problem.
