Many things could be bad, start with getting the error codes and letting us know exactly what the symptoms are, and what the history of the engine/pump is like.

3 Faults Found:

16764 - Glow Plug/Heater (Q6) Circuit
P0380 - 35-10 - Malfunction - Intermittent
16955 - Brake Switch (F)
P0571 - 35-00 - Implausible Signal
17552 - Mass Air Flow Sensor (G70)
P1144 - 35-10 - Open or Short to Ground - Intermittent
Engine/ Power has been dropping over past year.
Fuel mpg down to 38mpg from 46mpg.
More Black/Gray smoke last 6months.
Let car sit in garage for last 2.
Would start and let run for hour or so to keep battery charged.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions, have time but, funds limited.
Thank you

Well, I'd try a new Mass Air Flow sensor... (see metalmanparts or idparts for replacement...)

What did Bruce say?

Bruce said it looks like a bad injection pump.
He though the low pressure side works but, not the high side. He was sure about the electronics on the pump.
i did replace the MAF, to no avail.
That's why the question as to proving the injection pump, it's an expensive part.
The water pump, timing belt, pulley and tensioner were just done 20k miles ago.

I'd trust whatever Bruce says...

Keep your eyes open for a reasonably-priced used pump - but please avoid a certain set of outfits in North Carolina... check the classifieds on the TDIclub... pumps show up every once in a while...

Good luck,

Yuri
