Carbon Build up

What is this carbon build that I hear about. I've seen pics of some sort of passageway clogged with soot? Is this common? Even for a 2010?

I wouldn't expect any carbon cleaning in your future. The ULSD fuel has greatly cut down on buildup and better EGR regulation has pretty much minimized carbon buildup.
