Am I forced to go to the dealer to get a key programmed?

For my 2003 Jetta I bought a matching remote ket and had the key cut by the dealer. I was planning on purchasing the Vagcom from Ross Tech to program my key but they stated that I need to retrieve the code from the dealer?

Is that true? If that is the case they are going to charge me for the key anyway so I might as well pay the ransom and have them program the key.

Does anyone have a work around?

The dealer can't give it to you since they never see it, see the mk4 key FAQ for more on programming. Still cheaper to DIY and resell the tools but can't beat dealer for convenience.
