Default ALH / BEW Block - Auto vs Manual

I purchased a 99 beetle with a blown TDI engine (failed Main Bearing). Wondering if anyone can explain the ALH block designation versus BEW...not sure what my car has or where to look on block to determine.

Also, is there a different block for the automatic versus manual transmission?

I would like to buy a rebuilder block since the head is good on my engine.

Thanks!

You have the ALH block same as the AGR, the PD didn't come along till around 2004 for you guys.Regarding the gearbox it doesn't matter, there's no difference in the actual block. You should check out secind hand ones though, I've seen them knocking about on these forums.

Also, the beetle transmission gearing is slightly different than the Jetta-Golf gearing. I'm 95% sure they all fit though. And auto-manual all fit as long as they're 4 cylinder TDI.
