Welcome to the website!!Although it's devoted to Turbo Diesels, you should find a few of the articles useful for gas models... Have you looked at the transmission-removal page? http://www.myturbodiesel.com/1000q/a...emoval-mk4.htm Yuri |

Your link led me here - you have to be a member to view the next steps/procedure - on a new beetle 2.8 is exactly what I'm looking for. thx!

Have you tried to remove the transaxle on a 200 beetle without all said special tools and found you just don't have enough clearence to slide the transmission away from the engine (due to trans interference with lhs unibody to seperate and lower manual trans assy. THX

Those bolts, at least on the Diesels, are single-use fasteners that must be replaced. If the transmission had ever been removed previously and the bolts re-used, that may explain why they broke... It's possible to get the transmission out without removing that engine support...
If you swing the engine/transmission as far forward as possible while lowering the driver's side of the transmission (some people use the VW car jack to help push - it sort of fits between the block and the firewall), it helps a lot... BTW: getting the transmission back in is even more "fun" than taking it out... Good luck, Yuri |

Also dropping the flywheel side of the engine while pushing it forward really helps. I found installation easier than removal, mostly because I was able to balance the transmission on the straps I used to hang it from an engine hoist.
Having an assistant on the hoist REALLY helped. I don't know if I have super-human strength or just luck as I PUSHED the engine forward with one hand, then jammed a piece of lumber in between the engine block and sub frame cross member. |
