anti theft on jetta

hi, i have a 2002 vw jetta and the anti theft keeps flashing on the dash.

I sometimes get the immobilizer light flashing, I'm assuming mine is caused by the RFID chip in my key having trouble matching up with the one in the steering column. I would have to take the column itself of to check, and it seems like it's more trouble than it's worth as the problem is occasional and the car always starts. It could be a similar problem for your car... but more clues will help to identify the problem.
