I'm thinking about getting a 2012 VW JSW TDI. I've read about different issues that 2009-2011 TDI VWs have, like HPFP failing, engine stalling, etc. Dealers blame low quality diesel, or they said that gasoline was put in the tank, etc... refusing to cover the repair under warranty. Accidental engine stalling is very dangerous. Have these problems been addressed in 2012? I'm now a bit hesitant to buy this vehicle. Any advise would be appceviated. Thanks |

To be specific to your question, there is no evidence that these issues have been addressed. That said, there is evidence that the HPFP design has been revised a few times since 2009 production although nobody seems to know (or can say outside of Bosch and VW) what these changes are. They could just be to make the pump cheaper to build or more reliable or both.
My best guess is that these problems are more well known now vs. 2009 and that Bosch and VW are watching this issue carefully. However, they only happen to a minority of these cars. I really can't think of any other fuel efficient car that I would rather buy. If you like the Prius, go buy one of those because as a whole, I would bet their reliability is higher. there are always lemons and either way I wouldn't because I don't like the Prius so far. Honda's hybrids aren't worth it yet either. VW is coming out with the Jetta hybrid next year and I'll bet their hybrids will be lackluster choices for the first few generations too. The VW Touareg hybrid is a nice car...except for the fact that the Touareg TDI is a better car in almost every category. |

Thank you for your response.
Are these fuel pumps made by Bosch that you mentioned it? From what I read here, it is hard to get the dealer replace the pump under the warranty, and if you have to pay it is $9K. How can a fuel pump replacement cost 1/3 of the vehicle? What other issues do these cars have that are common? I would like to find out as much as possible before I decide to buy or not to buy. Also, how do they start/handle in winter? Thank you again. |

In the 90s and early 2000s, the fuel pumps were variants of older designs. The HPFP design is near-state of the art. BMWs had problems in the last few years too so in that case it only cost 1/5 of the car cost
But the difference is that metal contamination spreads throughout the whole fuel system and while it might be possible to clean and install a tiny filter to reuse things like the fuel tank, the dealer just replaces them.As far as I know, the car doesn't have any other common issues, the suspension and body are pretty reliable. If you read the posts here, there are random cases of the sunroof shattering and the radio failing but these are factory issues. The mk5 chassis has been around for a while and has been pretty reliable. The broken door wiring issues were fixed by now with longer wires. Seriously, the JSW is a great car, IMHO drive and enjoy it. There's no other car with this space and mpg. If potential probs aren't worth it or you find something else at a good price, go get that car. |

I'm pretty new to the forum. I have to read other threads here.
The sunroof shattering that you mentioned was one of the reasons that I decided not to buy a vehicle with a sunroof. The other reason is that the roof structure is weaker with the sunroof, since it is so big. So if the HPFP fails the dealer replaces a whole bunch of stuff, not just the HPFP itself? Well, then it make sense why it is so expensive. If I get a 2012 JSW, then it will have the latest (3rd) re-design of the HPFP. I have read that 2011 cars had HPFP failures, but don't know whether they had this newest HPFP. I also read on http://safercar.gov/ about injector some failures, which may also be a factory defect. |

Learn to accept that VWOA is not going to particularly support any issue you have. They have had that reputation for years, VW builds a well engineered vehicle- purchase it if you want a VW- no way of knowing if yours is going to be one that has issues.
My 2011 JSW TDI is the best vehicle I have ever owned (my 14th new car purchase over the years) I enjoy it, looking forward to driving it every time - the JSW TDI are FUN Just drive it and enjoy- Quote:
