Default Timing Belt Tool Rental?

Hi Folks:

I'm new to the world of TDI. I have a 2009 Jetta TDI sedan with the DSG tranny 97K miles.

I'm looking to do the timing belt, and I see on the site that there are tool rentals available. The page only list tools covering up to the 2006 model. Is there a kit/source for renting tools for the 2009 TDI?

I'm also considering replacing the HPFP. Are there any links that describe the replacement procedure on the pump? It's a bit radical, but I figure a grand for new pump is better then 6 to 10K for the alternative repairs if it goes.

Thanks!
Lee

Replacing the pump just for the heck of it? How much of the engine are you going to replace out of preventative maintenance?

I rent the tools, only difference vs older cars is you use one more pin. Same crank lock as older models.

Hi, not just for the heck of it. Unfortunately, there are not many 2009s with 90K Plus miles that I have been able to see/verify. So I feel like I'm in unknown territory with this pump relative to catastrophic failures. VW/Bosch have improved the pump a few times now, so the evidence suggests there may be issues with the original versions. I'd like to keep the car for the long haul if possible.

FYI, I've written to VW with my concerns, but as I'm out of warranty, I have no idea what kind of support/info. they will provide. Have you seen many 90K plus CR engines with no pump issues? I am admittedly on the fence on the issue, but having some peace of mind may be worth the cost of a new pump.

I'll be in touch soon about tool rental. Thank you very much. Any other advice is appreciated.

Regards,
Lee

Welcome to the forum Lee.

No you don't see many 2 year old cars with 90k+ on them.

The change interval:

Timing belt - Renew Every 80000 miles or 48 months
Timing belt tensioner - Renew Every 160000 miles or 96 months

Depending on the engine code the MY2010 Jetta is 140,000 miles belt change. They also have the camshaft gears that need timing.

Keith:

Thank you. The car is 3+ years old, but the previous owner commuted and put 30K per year on the car. Timing belt is 120K on these models, so I'll be changing shortly. I have a complete kit, with tensioners, rollers, water pump, etc. Might as well do everything while it's apart.

Wow, 140K on 2010 models?! I don't think I would trust any belt that long.

Regards,
Lee

Is there a link that covers camshaft gear timing?

Also, I thought I started this thread in the MK5 forum, but I see I'm in the MK6 forum either accidentally or it was moved.

It was posted in the mk6 forum, I will move.

Right now only resource is service manual. Where in PA are you? If not too far I wouldn't mind helping out in order to document this.

also, keithuk, I think your source may be a typo, as far as I know, US 2.0L timing belt is 120,000 miles.

Hi, I'm in the Allentown PA area. I'm certainly open to having help. Thanks for the offer. I'll chat you back channel to discuss. Still waiting to hear back from VW.

My 2010 Jetta TDI has 91,000 miles I travel about 180 to 200 miles a day in West Virginia. I will probably need the Timing belt changed soon as well or can it wait until 120 or 140k. I am new to diesels so what is the HPFP? and is it a part of the every 10k service? When should it be changed? I take my car to the Wheeling WV dealer every 10k. I know I might be able to do it my self I have been wrenching engines for way to long but never a VW or diesel just old Chevys, Fords, and Mopars. Thanks for the info.

Well I'm just quoting what Autodata says but that mainly covers European models. I don't know why the US models are less?
