Default replacing camshaft on brm

well guys and gals, it finally got me, the dreaded camshaft failure. I pullled the oil pan today and noticed quite a few pieces of metal in the pan, ouch, what say you, replace the oil pump as well? Also noticed that alot of people were replacing the water pump, guess that should be done as well while i'm at it? Anything else? The car has 160,000 so its due for 2nd TB and will do that as well. btw bought the tb/camshaft kit from Boraparts. Thanks for any and all replies

Default update with a question

well removed the camshaft today, inadvertantly (by not following directions) i removed the head bolts, 12mm triple square, shoulda known it said clearly that the bolts were 8mm, guess i chose to ignore that small detail. my question is two fold, first i feel compelled to clean the oil journals and anything else because of the particles of metal i found in the oil pan, best way to accomplish this? second, now that i have loosened the head bolts (all of them) should i go ahead and remove the head and ck pistons, etc, or put new bolts back in and roll it? when this cam went out my wife was 150 miles from home and drove it in burping, and blowing black smoke. Anything else i need to ck?
thanks again

The metal came down but the oil pump is protected by the pickup screen. IMHO, still running I would keep use it. But yes there is a tiny risk.

Water pump would be replaced w/timing belt, I wouldn't replace it just because. Since you said you have the TB kit then yes, didn't your kit come with it?

Not sure how to clean the journals without doing some disassembly and I'm not sure where they all go. In any case, the metal bits went down into the pan not back through the feed.

Did you move the head at all? If I were you, I'd put new bolts back in and tighten it in order prescribed. Then do a compression check and monitor the oil and water for contamination. If OK, great. If not you know what the problem is. The reason why is because you sound like you know how to DIY and have some space/time. Worth the risk. Don't worry, you're not the first to do that!

Lol Thanks, that's exactly what I said after I took that last bolt out and realized what I had done, no didn't move head at all, agreed, put it back together and keep ck for possible contamination. Great site btw, do you guys have a way of contributing like tdiclub has?

Thanks for info, can't find things on this iPad still trying to figure this thing out! No bolts at the dealership today for the TTY head bolts but will be here tomorrow, and yes after opening and inspecting the kit, it indeed does have a new water pump included, one thing that seems strange that it did not have was the seal for the cam, no idea why that wouldn't be included, surely you would need to replace that seal, at any rate he dealership (pipkin motors, Valdosta ga) had one in stock so I will pick it up tomorrow with head bolts. I did settle on removing the pickup screen from the pump and cleaning throughly, and of course have been very careful to remove any residue of oil I could find. I remember in a post that (frank06) had some sort of procedure for these that may be beneficial to look at, just need to find the old post. thanks again, I'll try to post pics tomorrow but to be honest it looks like all the rest I have seen posted
